SUBLIMINAL

The penultimate semester of my time in the SJSU BFA Graphic Design program was just like the two semesters that came before: filled to the brim with lengthy projects that tested my ability to experiment, collaborate, implement the design process, and execute simulations of real world design opportunities.

One of the projects that taught me a great deal about collaboration was the second assignment for Exhibition Design & Info Graphics. The aim was to put on a small exhibition lasting four days in one of the Art Building galleries using the concept of “Design in Society.”

The “10/10” group to which I belonged decided to amplify the importance of design and the media in social justice movements. We presented viewers with culturally significant facts, designs, and interactive segments that aimed to invoke curiosity and provide enlightenment on the often subliminal impact that design has on society.

As a designer I take pride in being well-organized, a good multitasker, and easily adaptable to various types of design. I enjoy actively designing as much as I enjoy dictating the direction of a project, but such skills have in turn made my ability to collaborate a little weaker. That is why I initially struggled to find my place among nine other classmates on a project that wove together so many types of graphic design: marketing, content, exhibition design, setup, documentation.

In the end, I chose to assist “10/10” squads with marketing and content as those were the areas of greatest interest to me. I pitched in with early concepts, as well as by sourcing designs and implementing vinyl visuals that directed potential viewers through the Art Building and to the SUBLIMINAL exhibition.

SUBLIMINAL Exhibition held at San Jose State University's Art Building, United States of America from November 6 through 9, 2017. Coordinated by 10 BFA Graphic Design students from the class of 2018. SUBLIMINAL on SJSU Graphic Design BFA’s website.
